Everyone with a kitchen owns a fridge. It is a fairly fundamental piece of equipment in the modern western world, everybody needs certain items keeping cool and therefore regardless of quality or age its safe to say almost everybody owns one or at least has access to one. The first fridges (or at least fridges as we know them today) were made around the early 1900′s since then their power sources and cooling systems etc have changed but they have fundamentally stayed fairly similar.

The LG Internet Fridge

Until now that is….. cue the ‘Smart Fridge’ or ‘Iappliance’ or whatever you want to call it, the name is not important because regardless when you see one you will want one, if your anything like us at least.

There are a few different types of new fridge which seem to be emerging at the moment internet fridges are one of the main ones but here I am talking about the whole concept of smart fridges and how they will undoubtedly change the way we use our kitchens, how our kitchens design works out and of course how we shop, eat and even deal with our garbage.

These appliances are bound to start making their way in to regular consumers homes any time now. We expect that they will soon play an integral role in the design of your kitchen as well as changing the way you use the room. These appliances are host to inbuilt TV screens, speakers and methods of connecting external devices such as laptops and MP3 players etc, internet connections – meaning you can restock and order shopping on-line without leaving your kitchen – and basically fully fledged computer systems including hard/software to:

weigh produce

scan bar codes and determine content

keep track of use by dates and reduce wastage

make meal suggestions

provide you with data on your diet

notify you when items are running low

order shopping on-line

Home Delivery with a Twist?

And many other previously not thought of tasks.

Here’s the really amazing, though perhaps concerning, thing. Manufactures are supposedly in discussion with major supermarkets and their delivery services as to whether or not to develop double sided fridges so that the fridge is accessible from outside the house so that, and wait for it, the supermarkets can take your order on-line, pick your items, and come round to your house and insert them into your fridge without entering the house!

Meaning you could run out of milk in the evening, order some more, go to sleep and there would be a fresh 2 pint carton sitting in your fridge door in the morning.

Now if that isn’t going to change the entire kitchen design process and the way you use your kitchen then I dont know what will!
